Al Fahidi Historic District

Dubai

Culture and Heritage

Strolling through Al Fahidi Historic District (formerly known as Al Bastakiya) will transport you back in time. This historic district is one of the oldest residential areas in Dubai and is a real contrast to the uber-modern metropolis that is central Dubai.

Walk along the narrow lanes and side streets and see classical Arabic-designed buildings, as well as the Al Fahidi Fort, one of the oldest existing buildings in Dubai. This picturesque district is also home to several museums, art galleries and cafes, so you can be informed, entertained and well-fed!

Visitors to the area appreciate the slow pace of the area, not to mention its authentic and old-fashioned aesthetics and tranquil atmosphere. It is a great way to experience both old and new Dubai and see what life was like in a time long ago. A lack of signs in the area also means that you are left to wander and discover things for yourself, which can be a lovely way to experience a new place.

The Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding (SMCCU) is also located in this neighbourhood.
